Electrolysis is a cosmetic
treatment for permanently removing hair from most areas of the face and
body. Eyebrows, face, underarms, breasts, abdomen, back and
legs can be treated with electrolysis.
Typically, a series of electrolysis sessions is required to completely
eliminate unwanted hair from an area of skin. After each session
the hair that regrows will be thinner and finer as the hair follicles
ability to produce hair is gradually diminished after successive
treatments until the hair growth tissue is permanently
eliminated. The treatment provided to you will be tailored to
suit your skin type, hair, and pain threshold.
Some discomfort may be experienced during the process, but most
modern electrolysis methods have reduced the discomfort to a mere
tingling. Generally there are no permanent side effects, although
temporary reddening of the skin can sometimes occur after a treatment
session. Your treatment provider can advise you on how to be comfortable and best protect your skin between treatment sessions.
The number of sessions required to completely and permanently remove
unwanted hair from an area of the face or body will vary from person to
person. Typically you will find the period between treatment
sessions is between one and two weeks, with each treatment lasting
between fifteen minutes to one hour. Once the series of
treatments is complete, the unwanted here will be gone forever.
How Does it Work?
Electrolysis works to permanently destroy a hair follicle's ability to
produce hair by precisely delivering a shot of electricity to the hair
growth centre of each follicle using a very fine sterile probe.
Proper insertion of the probe into the follicle does not puncture the
skin. The hair is then removed with tweezers.
Electrolysis Aftercare For the first two days
after treatment it is important to protect the treated areas and
minimise any temporary discomfort you may feel. Because the
treated hair follicles will be open immediately after treatment, they
will be more sensitive to infection and so recommended self care
includes gently keeping the area clean, avoiding public pools and
saunas, and postponing gymwork or sport that may cause the area to
become irritated or infected. Do not apply deodorants, lotions,
or powders to the treated areas unless they have been recommended by
your treatment provider. For more advice on electrolysis
aftercare please look at the Electrolysis - Post Treatment Care page.
